This is an interpretive frame, not an established finding. Historians disagree about how far such patterns predict anything.

Three forces recur at every major transition in this timeline — environmental shock, mass movement of people, and disease. They preceded the 4.2 kiloyear collapse, the Bronze Age Collapse, the fall of the Roman west, and the end of the Middle Ages. All three are present again now. That is a pattern worth noticing, not a prediction.

The Columbian Exchange

1,492 CE – 1,700 CE

Contact between hemispheres moved maize, potatoes, horses and silver — and smallpox, measles and influenza. Disease killed a large majority of the population of the Americas within a century, the deadliest demographic event in recorded history.

The Black Death

1,347 CE – 1,351 CE

Plague travelled the trade routes that had made Eurasia rich and killed perhaps a third to a half of Europe in four years. Labour became scarce and expensive, which weakened serfdom and reshaped the economy — a catastrophe that cleared ground for the Renaissance.

The worst year to be alive

536 CE – 550 CE

Mortality figures for the Plague of Justinian are estimates and have been revised downward by some recent work.

Volcanic dust dimmed the sun for over a year, temperatures dropped, and harvests failed across Eurasia. The Plague of Justinian followed, killing a large share of urban populations. Together they helped push the Huns west, the Germanic peoples into Roman land, and the western Mediterranean order into pieces.

Eurasia connects

130 BCE – 1,450 CE

Overland and maritime routes link Han China, Persia, India, Rome and Aksum into one exchange system. It moved silk, silver, paper, religion, mathematics — and eventually plague. Interconnection was always a shared vulnerability as much as a shared benefit.

440 BCE

The Axial Age

800 BCE – 200 BCE

The Axial Age is a useful frame but a contested one — some historians argue the simultaneity is overstated.

In roughly the same window, and with little contact between them, Greece produced systematic philosophy, India produced the Buddha and the Upanishads, China produced Confucius and Laozi, and Israel produced its prophetic tradition. Why this happened at once is one of the genuine open questions in history.

Catastrophe becomes literature

1,100 BCE – 600 BCE

Composition dates for all three traditions are debated and span centuries.

When literacy collapses, memory moves into verse. The Iliad, parts of the Hebrew Bible and the Mahabharata all take shape in or just after periods of disruption, turning collective disaster into moral foundation.

The Bronze Age Collapse

1,200 BCE – 1,150 BCE

Causes remain genuinely contested: drought, migration, earthquake, trade failure, or several at once.

Within about fifty years, most palace states of the eastern Mediterranean failed at once — Mycenaean Greece, the Hittites, and the Levantine cities. Writing disappeared from Greece for three centuries. No single explanation has ever been agreed on.

Iron replaces bronze, for an awkward reason

1,200 BCE

Bronze needed copper and tin, which usually came from different places — so bronze needed long-distance trade. When those routes broke, iron won not because it was better but because the ore was local. The upgrade was a consequence of failure, not progress.

Thera erupts and a myth is born

1,600 BCE

The eruption is well established; the link to the Atlantis story is a reasonable inference, not a fact.

A volcanic eruption in the Aegean cripples Minoan Crete and clears the way for Mycenaean Greece. It is also the most plausible physical seed of the Atlantis story — a case of catastrophe being metabolised into legend.

The 4.2 kiloyear event

2,200 BCE – 2,100 BCE

Dating and the strength of the causal link to each collapse are still debated.

Roughly a century of severe drying across the northern hemisphere. Within a few generations the Egyptian Old Kingdom fragmented, the Akkadian Empire fell apart, and Indus Valley cities began emptying. It is the clearest early demonstration that sophistication is no defence against a bad climate.
